EXCHANGE makes spaces for young artists to share their stories, and develop their creative voices and collaborative skills. Organized by The School for Contemporary Dance & Thought, EXCHANGE will engage western Ma teens over an 18 month project that will develop lasting creative collaborative relationships, offer workshops on skill building around all aspects of performance art, foster diversity, and most importantly; platform the teen creative voice. Montague Seeks Muralist for the Shea Theater

The Town of Montague seeks an experienced muralist to paint a 3,000 square foot mural on a wall of the Shea Theater Arts Center, located at 71 Avenue A in Turners Falls, Massachusetts. The mural will function as a gateway, with the goal of instantly branding the village as a creative community and encouraging residents and visitors and enjoy local retail shops, restaurants, and the art scene.

The Town is working with Common Wealth Murals (CWM) to assist with this project. CWM is a mural management nonprofit that partners with professional muralists and communities to create public art which reflects the hopes, histories, and heroes of their neighborhoods.

A mural steering group is comprised of Montague residents, business owners, and representatives from the Shea Theater, RiverCulture and the Montague Planning Department has been formed to provide oversight of this work. The steering group will assist with preparing the Artist Call/RFP, muralist selection process, public outreach and community engagement, and the review and approval of the final design. The muralist selection criteria will focus on previous work and experience, commitment to creating public art that reflects the community where the art is located, and increasing the diversity of artistic representation in Turners Falls.

The selected artist will be expected to create a mural design based on input from a community listening session and information provided by the steering group. The muralist will need to submit a to-scale, color concept sketch to the steering group for feedback and approval. Some sketch revisions based on feedback should be expected.

The selected muralist will receive an artist fee of $15,000. All paint, supplies, equipment, transportation, room and board will be provided. The mural is expected to be painted by September 2024.

Zea Mays Printmaking Offers Free Memberships to BIPOC Artists

FLORENCE, MA – Community printmaking studio Zea Mays Printmaking is expanding its diversity, equity and inclusion efforts with a new subsidized membership program for BIPOC artists. Artists that identify as BIPOC will be able to apply for a free year-long membership to the studio, which also includes 100 hours of access to the studio facilities for independent work. Zea Mays Printmaking plans to offer the BIPOC Artist Membership to two artists in 2024, with hopes that donations from members will make it possible to offer more in the future.

Zea Mays Printmaking has operated in Florence since 2000, when its founder, artist Liz Chalfin, opened the studio with the goal of researching, developing and teaching less toxic and more sustainable methods of fine-art printmaking. Since its inception, Zea Mays Printmaking has grown to over 180 members, a full faculty roster and a year-round workshop schedule. Zea Mays Printmaking members, who normally pay a minimum of $75 a year for membership, are allowed to purchase independent working time in the fully equipped printshop, receive a discount on workshop registration, and are given opportunities to display their work in the Zea Mays Printmaking Flat File and at other community exhibitions. 

“At Zea Mays Printmaking, we believe environmental justice, social justice, economic justice and racial justice are inextricably intertwined. As part of our mission to help make printmaking safer for artists and the environment, we are committed to finding ways to remove barriers of access to our studio for artists from marginalized racial and ethnic groups.” Kaye Carroll, Zea Mays Printmaking Director of Marketing, goes on to explain, “A lot of forms of printmaking require access to equipment and training that many beginning artists, or artists facing institutional or economic challenges, do not have. Over the past couple of years, we have been seeking to address this issue through several changes, such as simplifying our membership application process, offering more beginner-friendly courses, providing scholarships for artists with financial need, and most recently this BIPOC Artist Membership program. Each of these initiatives is in service of the same goal: to let artists of all backgrounds, whatever their means and whichever stage of their artistic journey they are on, know that they are welcome and wanted in this community.”

Northampton Youth Cinema Festival Call for Submissions

The Northampton Youth Cinema Festival is a relaunch of the YouthFilm Festival, last run in 2017. The festival ran for 17 years before it was shelved. The festival is being relaunched by two Northampton High School filmmakers collaborating with the Northampton Arts Council and Northampton Open Media.

The festival screenings will take place on April 19th, 2024, at the tail end of the week-long Northampton Kidsbestfest.

Call for Submissions

We encourage high-school and college-age filmmakers to submit their films. We are accepting film submissions that are under 30 minutes, excluding documentaries. The submission deadline is March 1st, 2024.

A selection committee will view submissions, and filmmakers will be notified in late March.

Selected films will be screened at the Academy of Music Theatre in Northampton on Friday, April 19th, 2024.

I. OVERVIEW
The City of Greenfield, in collaboration with local educators and historians, has identified twelve sites historically significant to the abolitionist movement in Greenfield that are located in the downtown neighborhood, which is also a Mass Cultural Council Cultural District. The sites include former residences of abolitionists, potential locations of underground railroad activity, and the location of addresses given by nationally prominent figures like Frederick Douglass. The City will hire up to twelve artists/teams to paint murals on the sidewalks nearest each site in order to inform residents and visitors of the historical connection to the abolitionist movement that exists in downtown Greenfield. The art should be illustrative of the subject of each site but final design decisions will rest with the artists. Source photos of involved individuals will be provided whenever possible (see Appendix A). 

II. AWARD
The City of Greenfield will provide a stipend of $1,000 for each mural painted on an approximately 48x48” section of sidewalk. Stipends are inclusive of the cost of art supplies selected by the artist/team and approved by the City. The City of Greenfield will provide low-slip, Americans-with-Disabilities-Act compliant paint to each artist//team at no cost (artists may use their own similar low-slip paint if approved by the City). If an artist is selected for multiple murals they will receive $1,000 for each work (e.g. $3,000 for 3 murals). The City will block off sections sidewalks and ensure that any permitting requirements are met before work begins.

The City of Greenfield will enter into grant agreements with individual artists and/or artist teams. 50% of the award amount will be paid upon signing the agreement and the remaining 50% paid upon completion and acceptance of the project by the City

III. WHO CAN APPLY
The call is open to any resident of the United States of America aged 18 years or older. Current or former residents of Greenfield, Massachusetts, and Massachusetts artists familiar with Greenfield are strongly encouraged to apply. Artists and teams with experience in community arts, creative engagement, murals, and paintings are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate experience working with community-based organizations, BIPOC communities, and other segments of the population that are underrepresented in the public realm. Artists at all levels of experience – including individuals who are currently enrolled in school – are encouraged to apply.

LCC Grant Applications Due October 17th!

Proposals for community-oriented arts are due today, October 17th!

The Northampton Arts Council has set a deadline of October 17th for organizations, schools, and individuals to apply for grants supporting community arts activities. These grants can support various artistic projects and activities in Northampton, Florence, and Leeds-- including exhibits, festivals, field trips, short-term artist residencies, or performances in schools, workshops, and lectures.

This year, the Northampton Arts Council will distribute $22,705 in grants to support arts activities.

The Northampton Arts Council is part of a network of 329 Local Cultural Councils serving all 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth. ArtsHub - Building Community, Resiliency & an Equitable Creative Economy: A Day of Connecting Artists

The ArtsHub of Western MA invites artists and creatives, and arts managers of all kinds to join ArtsHub - Building Community, Resiliency & an Equitable Creative Economy: 

A Day of Connecting Artists, a day of workshops, panel discussions and community to be held on Saturday, September 23, 10 am to 2 pm at Bombyx Center for Arts & Equity, 130 Pine St, Florence, MA.  

The registration link and bios may be found at www.umass.edu/aes/artshub-bombyx.  This event is made possible thanks to the City of Northampton’s ARPA Community Recovery Projects grant and creatives from Northampton, Florence and Leeds are given priority, but the event is open to all.  The Early bird registration cost is $15 plus a nominal processing fee through September 9th, then $30 plus processing fee through September 18th when registration closes.  Registration includes coffee and networking snacks, and lunch from Masa Mexicano. 

The morning session "Communication. Connection. Collaboration” will be emceed by Justin Beatty, artist, DEI Consultant for the ArtsHub, and owner of the Odenow Powwow, and will feature panelists Felicia Lundquist, principal of Think Again, which focuses on Social Justice trainings; Mollye Maxner, co-director of A.P.E. Gallery; and Iohann Vega, Director of Media Engagement at Holyoke Media. 

"Improving our ability, as artists, to express the world around us is often bolstered by developing relationships that help us gain perspective and knowledge. Dialogue across the talented and varied communities of artists in Western Massachusetts can help us individually become more insightful and accurate in expression through our respective crafts. How do we create this dialogue? What does the work to develop relationships look like at times? How can we be respectful of others while sharing our perspective of the world in our works?" asks Beatty.

The morning session will explore these concepts from a regional perspective as per the description: “As a community of artists, we communicate through our respective crafts. We create commentaries on the world around us through sound, movement, & visual representation. To delve deeper and be more accurate in communicating the world around us to others, we sometimes look to collaborate with each other. But how do we do this work? How do we develop opportunities and relationships with each other in order to create partnerships in our craft? How can we engage with communities and artists that may come from other experiences outside our own in ways that are respectful, honest, informative, and fun? Where are our blind spots? How do we connect & collaborate when our commonalities may be limited to our love of the arts? This panel discussion seeks to explore options, methods, successes, and complications of community building in order to provide us with tools to improve the collective knowledge around community & collaboration for artists in Western Massachusetts."

“Artist Nayana Lafond, best known for her #MMIWG series (Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls), and I will lead the afternoon session, Creating Art, Creating Community explores how to incorporate the morning’s concepts into one’s own art or creative business, and asks: “How do we work together so our work and time is valued and recognized as the core of the creative economy? How do we understand and utilize the community’s assets so we can expand and take advantage of opportunities?” explains Dee Boyle-Clapp, Director of the Arts Extension Service at UMass Amherst and an ArtsHub co-coordinator.

“The discussion personalizes the morning’s exploration of working in community and in collaboration. We will ask how artists can best support themselves while supporting and working in collaboration with one another, share ideas on how to bolster their careers through community building, and ask how the ArtsHub can - besides financial - support their efforts.” said Boyle-Clapp. “The afternoon session will not be shy about confronting the unique needs and opportunities available to, and confronting, artists. It is exciting to be an artist or performer, however, as creatives we often need to work in isolation to make art, but to change an ecosystem, we will get farther together.”

Call for Storytelling Submissions

Have you ever wanted to tell a story from the stage? This is an invitation to contribute submissions for an unusual happening. Dina Stander is producing a storytelling event to benefit the Hospice of the Fisher Home in Amherst MA. The show is called Healing Waters: Stories of loss, mourning, solace, and hope. This will be an in-person matinee show on Sunday, November 5th, at 2:00 p.m. at the Shea Theater in Turners Falls MA.

Dina Stander is curating a selection of 5-10-minute stories that connect strongly along the arc of the themes. Performers will receive a modest stipend. This is not a story slam. It will offer an engagement between Tellers and the audience that is greater than the sum of its parts.

UMassFive Call to Artists

UMassFive is hosting a Northampton Chamber of Commerce Event on September 6th, 2024 at 5pm at the Delaney House in Holyoke, MA. The theme for the event is “Artists & Networking”, and the Credit Union is looking for several local artists to table at the event to showcase their work, discuss their craft, and/or distribute anything related that advances the artist’s profile in our local business community. The event will have approximately 100-125 people at it. There will be food and a cash bar at the event.

If you are looking for local exposure, the room will be filled with difference-makers from across the Valley. UMassFive would love to discuss this more if you are available that evening and have an interest in joining in on what is sure to be a fun event. You wouldn’t have to give a speech or do anything except represent your work.

WHAT: The 13th Annual Northampton Chalk Art Festival Call for Artist Hosts
WHEN: September 8, 2023 8am to 5pm 
WHERE: Downtown Northampton, MA. 

This September, we are celebrating the 13th annual Northampton Chalk Art Festival! From 8am to 5pm on Friday, September 8, we’re welcoming a talented collection of artists to downtown Northampton - and we are looking for businesses who would like to host a chalk artist for the day.

What does this involve?
● If there is sufficient room for both artist and sidewalk traffic, we will position a chalk artist to draw on a 5’ x 5’ (or thereabouts) square outside your storefront window. They will draw throughout the day, to be completed by 4pm; completed drawings will be on display for that evening’s Arts Night Out.
 ● If there is not sufficient room, or you don’t have a first-floor space, we will match you with an artist positioned elsewhere, and will place signage at their location indicating that they are sponsored by your business.

What does this cost?
● $200 to sponsor or host an artist. $100 of that goes directly to the artist; $100 goes towards our event costs, including marketing and three cash prizes ($300, $200 and $100), awarded to artists chosen by a panel of judges and awarded by the Mayor at 5pm on the steps of City Hall. The event itself is free for all to attend. What will the DNA provide?
 ● We will provide an artist, and will give you their name and background information by August 11, 2023;
● Maps listing the artists, their locations and their sponsor will be provided to all Arts Night Out locations, as well as all businesses hosting or sponsoring a chalk artist, to be available for the week leading up to - and during - the September Arts Night Out;
● Posters will be available by early August for those who would like them; a jpeg and pdf will also be available to utilize as you would like (in social media, email correspondence, printed posters, etc.).

In 2024, A.P.E is piloting a space and curation cooperative model as a means of stewarding access to the Workroom at 33 Hawley. Artists, creators, and artist groups are invited to ‘buy-in’ to this time-based share structure, through which the responsibility for tending to, enlivening, and activating the Workroom will be distributed amongst the shareholders.

In creating the Workroom Cooperative, we are led by a commitment to artistic inquiry and the creation of new work, as well as by A.P.E.’s mission to steward space for artists in ways that reduce economic pressures which can encumber the creative process.

The Workroom Cooperative creates a space where a diverse group of artists: ● engage with a range of creative endeavors within all stages of the creative process (rehearsals, residencies, performances, festivals, etc)

● explore curatorial ideas

● share responsibility for care and upkeep of the space

● can teach classes and workshops

● cultivate rich dialogue, exchange, and reciprocal support of artists’ work ● honor time and space for process, including fallow periods

With multiple artists/companies designing what occurs in the Workroom, this model can expand the scope and reach of the artistic practices that happen there and ground the Workroom’s identity in the community as a space for process, performance, and inquiry. Co-ops have been shown to help arts thrive. We are excited to join this growing movement.

Catalyst Film Festival showcases short films and video art by trans filmmakers. We will be having online screenings as well as several in-person screenings in New England starting this August 2023 for our first summer.

We want to bring these films into our tiny hometowns in rural New England, and to create more opportunities for community amongst trans artists. To do this, we plan to tour with multiple screenings in Vermont, Massachusetts, and other states. Additionally, we will make the films available for viewing online for the duration of our tour.

Catalyst is an entirely trans-run festival, and submissions are judged by a team of trans judges.

OPEN APPLICATION: THE STUDIOS AT MASS MoCA RESIDENCY - MASSACHUSETTS FELLOWSHIP
In addition to workshops, applications are currently open for our other program, The Studios at MASS MoCA. Jan. 31-Feb. 26, 2024, the Studios will host our annual Residency for Massachusetts Creatives, focused on building a close-knit cohort of artists of all disciplines from across the Commonwealth. In addition to free housing and studio space, residents will have opportunities to take part in group events, field trips, and other collectively determined activities.

Northampton Arts Council ArtsEZ 2023 Grant Round

The Northampton Arts Council is pleased to announce the opening of our ArtsEZ 2023 SPRING GRANT ROUND on April 14, 2023, with a deadline of Friday, May 19, 2023. Individuals, schools, and arts organizations are encouraged to seek funding for creative projects to be held in Northampton, Florence, and Leeds. The grants are funded by the proceeds from the Northampton Arts Council’s signature events: The Silver Chord Bowl, Performance, and First Night Northampton.


This spring, the Northampton Arts Council will grant up to $12,500 to local artists, schools, and arts groups. Grants will be awarded in the following categories: dance, film/video, literature, mixed media, music, schools, theater, and visual arts. Individual artists and arts organizations will receive equal consideration for grants.


To apply, please complete the ArtsEZ Spring 2023 Online-Only Application Form. The link to the application will be live on our website on April 14th. It is a simple form with short questions, a place to upload supporting materials, and a required project budget. Only one grant application per person or organization will be considered. Please review the Arts EZ Spring 2023 guidelines for criteria and eligibility requirements. Projects must start by July 1, 2023, and be complete by June 30, 2024. This local round of funding would not have been possible without the support of numerous local businesses, arts organizations, and artists who helped make our fundraising efforts successful. Performance 33 Live Tribute Music Fundraiser Theme Announcement

Our staff has deliberated with local musicians, past hosts, and other creatives to determine this year’s Performance theme. On Tuesday, August 22nd, 2023, Performance 33: The Elements will be live at Pines Theater of Look Park. 

We will celebrate the power of science and weather with The Elements! Performers will take on the personas of artists like Earth, Wind & Fire, Canned Heat, Silver Jews, Weather Report, Kool & The Gang, My Chemical Romance, Steely Dan, Arcade Fire, Muddy Waters…. the list goes on! 

Musicians, email ideas about what artist or band you would like to perform to arts@northamptonma.gov. Sending us multiple choices is always helpful. The lineup will be announced in July. Spread the word throughout the music community. We are always on the search for new performers!

Save the date for Performance 33: The Elements on Tuesday, August 22nd, from 4:00 pm to 9:30 pm. Join us as we celebrate 33 years of sailing into the sunset with everyone's favorite end-of-summer event.

What is Performance Live Tribute Music Fundraiser?

Each year in August, the Northampton Arts Council and the Parent Teacher Organizations of Northampton’s public school system join forces to raise funds for arts enrichment in the schools and our community. THE end-of-the-summer live tribute music fundraiser is held at Pines Theater in Look Park. Local musicians are asked to play cover songs from specific bands under an annual theme that we determine. This year is the 33rd year of the concert; The first-ever iteration was Woodstock: The Performance Peace, where local musicians covered bands and songs performed at Woodstock in 1969. For many years the event was named Transperformance, but the name was changed three years ago.
